That summer, I read that the Tony Award-winning Broadway stage production of “Hairspray” was touring the nation and I decided my daughter and I should go see it. I searched for dates and places we could realistically visit and never found one.
In subsequent years, I searched for notices of a tour several times, but it wasn’t until last fall that I learned the 2022 tour of “Hairspray” was coming to Huntsville’s Von Braun Center on April 1-3, hosted by Broadway Theatre League.
Legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber apparently thought so, too. The charming mischief makers inspired Webber to write the musical “Cats,” the fourth longest running Broadway play of all time. It has earned more than $3.5 billion to date. Let’s just say its success brought about the phenomenon of the “megamusical.”
The stage version, “An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical” is coming to Huntsville’s Von Braun Center from Jan. 14-16. Broadway Theater League Huntsville is hosting the five performances over three days in the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall.
